Notice of Vacancy Oberlin City Council

Oberlin City Council is accepting applications from eligible residents interested in appointment to fill a vacancy on City Council.

The vacancy will occur at the end of 2026. Pursuant to Section III (D) of the Charter of the City of Oberlin, the vacancy will be filled for the unexpired term by a majority vote of the remaining members of City Council. The person appointed shall serve for the balance of the unexpired term or until a successor is elected and qualified.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the qualifications established by the Charter of the City of Oberlin and the Constitution and laws of the State of Ohio.

Section III(B) of the Oberlin City Charter provides that no person is eligible to serve as a member of Council unless, at the time of appointment, the person is qualified under the then-existing requirements for election of council members of municipalities established by the Constitution and laws of the State of Ohio. A Council member must continue to be a resident of the City of Oberlin throughout the member’s term of office.

The Charter further provides that:

  • No member of Council shall hold an appointive office within the Municipality.
  • No member shall be interested in the profits or emoluments of any contract, job, work, or service for which monies of the Municipality are, or will be, expended.
  • A municipal employee of the City of Oberlin is not eligible to serve as a member of Council.
  • An employee of the City Schools of the City of Oberlin, or any other school district, or educational system is eligible to serve as a member of Council.
